Phase 4: Digital portfolio & self assessment essay

Throughout the course of English 2100 I have learned quite a few important valuable lessons and developed as a writer and thinker this semester. This course has helped me understand some effective learning objectives. One valuable learning objective that was crucial was composing as a process. I learned the benefits and importance of creative writing, and the importance of language and literacy. The process of generating a topic, then creating an outline, multiple drafts, and final essay is very structured and organized. Creating an outline underlines the basis of what your essay is going to be about. Then the draft builds off on your outline. Within the course we would have a time period before the final essay is due to get it peer reviewed by the teacher and other peers. I found that very effective because when it came to my Rhetorical Analysis I remember that I had completed a draft and had taken it to our course meetings and my fellow peers and professor has helped point out parts that are done well and parts of the essay that I was missing that was required according to the rubric. I believe I have achieved the course learning objective of composing my essays as a process. Throughout most of my course requirement essays I implemented many personal experiences. Personal experiences are very effective in relating to your thesis of the essay or your claim. For example for my research argument based essay about discrimination and mistreatment based on color, I shared an experience of my own in which I was discriminated based on my color. Discourse communities and social conventions are crucial in shaping what we write because it creates a sense of connectivity. You can relate different social understandings of different viewpoints to understand a common purpose. For example, for our rhetorical analysis essay and research essay we would take in consideration of different course supplemental readings and we would compare and contrast the different viewpoints of the author but relating their purposes. Taking into consideration audience, genre, and purpose, it shapes how we write the essays based on tone. For example, for the research paper, I had to write the essay in a more informative, and compelling tone in order for the problem to be solved. I wrote in an informative tone because the genre is research paper, the audience and purpose was so I can highlight how negatively impacted we are due to race. Within the course we learned how to effectively read a text and critically analyze the text. Majority of the essays required us to implement a supplemental course reading. For our rhetorical analysis essay, I had to read critically and think deeply about exactly what Safwat Saleem’s argument was. I had to critically analyze rhetorical strategies Saleem had used in order to compose his central message effectively. For the essay we had to think deeply on who Saleem was targeting with his message and we had to identify in what form of tone he composed his argument. For the rhetorical essay I had to take a quote based on my thesis, and then critically analyze it and relate it to Saleem’s argument. Throughout the course, considering multiple perspectives in your writing helps strengthen your own argument. For example, for the research based essay, I had used multiple different sources where I had to synthesize different viewpoints and relate the viewpoints back to my argument and explain how it related to it. For the essay I had referred to 2 credible sources, 1 course reading, and my personal experience. Having credible sources also helps establish your credibility as a writer. Have credible sources show you know what you’re talking about, and that you want to talk about the topic. Using conventions appropriate to your audience, genre, and purpose is something that I may need a little more progress.
